Transnationalism and Public Space: Afro-Brazilian Art in Context
Wed, Feb 26, 2020
6:00 PM–8:00 PM
The Skylight Room (9100)

This event examines the production of Afro-Brazilian art within the context of the global turn in art production, scholarship, and the art market. Join Roberto Conduru and Abigail Lapin Dardashti for a conversation, moderated by Claudia Calirman, addressing the relevance of Afro-Brazilian art for a global contemporary art scene and art historical discourse. In part, this event will explore the work of living artists and its presentation at international exhibitions like the Venice Biennale and recent, large-scale exhibitions like the 2018 Histórias Afro-Atlanticas at the Museu de Arte, São Paulo. While much of black fine arts production has been marginalized from mainstream narratives of Brazilian art and culture, this event elaborates on a growing field of black art in Brazil and inserts current scholarship developing abroad in a U.S. context.
This event is free and open to the public, butplease RSVP here.
Co-sponsored by the Center for the Humanities, the Institute for Research on the African Diaspora in the Americas and the Caribbean (IRADAC), the Doctoral Students’ Council, and the Ph.D. Program in Art History at The Graduate Center, CUNY.
