CCAP: Classroom Lesson Plans
Overview
The CUNY Climate Assembly Project on Waste at Hunter College is engaging students across the university to learn, deliberate, and develop Waste Management strategies for the campus community. While only 42-students are selected to be in the intensive assembly process, faculty across disciplines are invited to integrate related learning opportunities into their courses.
We have multiple lesson plans that range from 15 to 90 minutes in length that are designed to be easily implemented (plug and play), adaptable, and broadly relevant to Hunter students. We have a short Campus Waste Survey that students, faculty, and staff can take that will directly input into the assembly proposal development process. And we have Public Events throughout the semester that can be extra credit opportunities in your courses
Lesson Plan Overviews
Circular Economy
15 Minutes
In this short lesson, students will reflect upon the ultimate destinations of discarded waste items and consider strategies that could help a community transition from a traditional linear economy to a circular economy
Waste Management
45 Minutes
In this lesson, students will investigate how garbage and recyclables have been sorted on campus. They will reflect upon whether items have been classified correctly and consider barriers to the correct disposal of waste items by the campus community. Finally, they will propose actionable solutions to improve waste classification and identify the actors responsible for implementing these solutions.
Model Civic Assembly
90 Minutes
In this lesson, students will participate in a model civic assembly convened by the administration of Gotham University, a fictional, urban, commuter campus in New York City. Assembly delegates (students) have been tasked with evaluating three strategies to improve waste management at Gotham University. Specifically, organizers and administrators have asked delegates to draft requests for additional information about the three strategies that would help inform their final recommendations to Gotham University
Faculty can support student engagement in three simple ways:
- Embed a CCAP lesson into your course
Download full lesson plans here! For more Waste content, you can also register for NYC Trash Academy, a free, independent study course offered by the Sanitation Foundation! Learn more about the curriculum here. - Encourage students to complete the campus waste survey
If you don’t have space to plug in a lesson in your course, you can simply announce the survey and events in your course using this CCAP Announcement Slide. Faculty and staff can take it too! - Promote CCAP public events throughout the semester.
Where appropriate, offering extra credit for attendance is strongly appreciated and helps broaden student involvement.
