About the event

Free and open to all.

As part of the exhibition Modern-ish: Yonia Fain and the Art History of Yiddishland, this bilingual Yiddish-English literary event will focus on Yiddish writings on art, artists and transnationalism. Scholar and translator Sheva Zucker and actor Shane Baker will read the original works and Zucker's translations of Yonia Fain's prose and poems, including “The Museum,” “Gray on Gray,” “Guernica,” “The Hotel,” and “Johannes Vermeer” among others. Scholar Elazar Elhanan, CUNY Graduate Center and City College, will present his research on Yiddish literature with attention to refugee migration and transnationalism. Additionally at the event, art historian Jennifer Stern’s new Yiddish poem “Jewish Hands” will be presented, especially composed as a response to the Modern-ish exhibition and Yonia Fain's practice as a painter and a poet.

Presented in partnership with the League for Yiddish; the Congress for Jewish Culture, and the Center for Jewish Studies, CUNY Graduate Center.
