Kyle Canter

Kyle Canter is a PhD student in art history, majoring in the history of photography. His research interests include sites of collaboration in U.S. art, domestic photography collections, the relationship between photography and poetry, and the politics of social documentary photography. He is also interested in the intersection between photography, the medical humanities, and gender/sexuality studies. Prior to joining the Art History Program at the Graduate Center, he completed an MA in art history at Hunter College and wrote a thesis on the history and pedagogy of photography at Black Mountain College. His writing has been published in 125th Street: Photography in Harlem, the Journal of Black Mountain College Studies, and Flashpoint! Protest Photography in Print, 1950–Present. He was a 2025 CUNY Summer Fellow at the Morgan Library and Museum, where he developed a project on the photo collage artist John O’Reilly.
