In 1970, Alix Kates Shulman’s famous essay “A Marriage Agreement”—which proposed that partners share childcare and housework equally—moved from the radical margins of feminist journal Up From Under to mainstream venues like LIFE, New York, and Redbook, initiating a long and rich public debate. Shulman’s first novel, Memoirs of an Ex-Prom Queen (1972) was a bestseller and similarly impacted the cultural landscape. Can today’s feminists yield similar influence?
