How has the role of feminist writing and activism transformed over the last forty years? In 1970, Alix Kates Shulman’s famous essay “A Marriage Agreement”—which proposed that partners share childcare and housework equally—moved from the radical margins of feminist journal Up From Under to mainstream venues like LIFE, New York, and Redbook, initiating a long and rich public debate. Shulman’s first novel, Memoirs of an Ex-Prom Queen (1972) was a bestseller and similarly impacted the cultural landscape. Can today’s feminists yield similar influence? Join Shulman in conversation with writer and activist Jennifer Baumgardner as they discuss Shulman’s new novel, Ménage, and a lifetime of feminism, activism, and writing both fiction and memoir. Moderated by Nancy K. Miller, literary critic and memoirist.
