As open publishing has evolved from its academic roots, greater interest and opportunity exists to facilitate publishing from and for non-academic sources. However, the diverse forms of knowledge emerging from grassroots communities (projects and programmes that are defined by the wants and needs of the people involved) are not well served by existing open publishing models, which remain grounded in academic systems and their guiding structures. Given the different audiences, expectations and measures of impact for grassroots communities, their contributions require radical solutions that are driven by their needs and goals.

There is an urgent need to formalise connections amongst a currently informal network of interested parties, and to better define the parameters of the problem space we are engaged in. This will develop radically inclusive open publishing models that support the diverse forms of knowledge production emerging from grassroots communities, lower barriers to participation and ensure that the diverse contributions that exist outside of and at the boundaries of the academy are valorised as contributions to our collective knowledge.

The Community Publishing Garden facilitated by Kath Burton and Zoe Wake Hyde, is an innovative space where we’ll gather together to engage, collaborate, and design the future of community publishing. The Community Publishing Garden is currently in the planning stage, if you’re interested helping cultivate a Community Publishing Garden where knowledge flourishes for all, please reach out to us [email protected].
