The great task of our times is to stop all new fossil fuel infrastructure. If we wish to prevent catastrophic climate disruption, we cannot dig up more coal, drill for more oil and gas, and further exploit tar sands. To win a just transition, the climate justice movement must set forth clear and emancipatory alternatives to fossil capitalism. And we must be clear that our struggle is not just about remaking our energy infrastructures, but also about transforming the cultural outlooks and institutions that fossil capitalism has generated. This panel, featuring Richard Berkley (New York’s Utility Project) Ashley Dawson (Climate Action Lab), Summer Sandoval (Uprose & Sunset Park Solar Coop) andLee Ziesche (Sane Energy) will provide an overview of current struggles for energy transition, with a focus on NYC-based campaigns to establish local solar collectives and to decommodify and democratize control of the grid.

This event is free and open to the public.

Co-sponsored by The Center for the Humanities, the Committee on Globalization and Social Change, the PhD Department in English at The Graduate Center, CUNY, and O/R Books.
