Indigenous Women in Cinema: The Rage, The Healing, The Creativity

Tue, Mar 11, 2025

6:00 PM–8:00 PM

Elebash Recital Hall, CUNY Graduate Center, 365 5th Ave, NYC. Free and open to all. Registration required.

Come join us on Tuesday, March 11, 2025 at 6:00 PM at the CUNY Graduate Center for an evening honoring Women’s History Month by showcasing the lived experiences, struggles, and power of Indigenous women, celebrating the role of film in telling their stories—both through the lens of the filmmaker and the eyes of those whose experience resides within the narrative. Acknowledge the rage born of silence, the healing through shared narratives, and the creativity that bridges the two.

Joining us in-person from Turtle Island, Hawai’i and Aotearoa (New Zealand), our special guests Lakota activist Marcy Gilbert, film directors Jalena Keane-Lee, Elizabeth Castle, and Kath Akuhata-Brown will share scenes from their films and discuss how The Rage, The Healing and The Creativity resonates with themselves and their work, asserting Indigenous sovereignty, self-determination and shifting narratives for social change. The event will also feature musical performances from Indigenous artists and a post-show reception with refreshments provided.
