Summer Research Fellowships for Emerging Public Scholars

With support from the Early Research Initiative, the Public Scholarship Practice Space (PS2) at the Center for the Humanities is thrilled to offer $4,000 summer research stipends to CUNY Graduate Center Ph.D. students from any program conducting research that engages the public meaningfully in its methods and outputs and/or answers to public needs and priorities.
The primary responsibilities of the award winners will be to produce original research––including but not limited to a dissertation proposal or chapter––by September 2024. Recipients will also be invited to meet as an interdisciplinary cohort once in fall 2024 and once in spring 2025 to share strategy, articulate struggles, and find support. Fellowship recipients will also be required to produce a short, reflective blog post forDistributaries on the Center’s website in Fall 2024. Additional opportunities for social media contributions are possible.
Successful proposals will incorporate the following in a proposal no longer than 1000 words:
Clear articulation of why the project matters and to whom, including who the project’s public or publics are, what constitutes your connection to those public(s), and how the research will engage with those public(s) during its development and after its conclusion.
Thoughtful discussion the theory, method, and ethics behind your research;
Brief account of how this project relates to your progress in your program.
Please note if the grant will be used to acquire a new skill or new area of knowledge that will advance your research. Priority will be given to projects with clearly identified community partners.
To apply, send a detailed letter of interest describing your project that addresses the above points, a c.v., a current Graduate Center transcript (students may submit the unofficial student copy that can be printed from CUNYfirst), and a letter of support from your primary advisor.
