How might writing fiction become a reparative act? Jess Row and Claudia Rankine will be in conversation as part of The Racial Imaginary Institute series of talkbacks “On Whiteness.” Both point out the evasive power of whiteness. Jess Row’s White Flight examines the spaces that white writers have made for themselves to avoid issues of race. In her first play, The White Card, Claudia Rankine reveals the invisible normalization of white privilege through observation of subtle details of the tone and dynamics of interpersonal interactions. This evening will provide the opportunity to join in a conversation with the writers about the invented concept of race that operates with extraordinary force in our daily lives.

Co-sponsored by The Racial Imaginary Institute and The James Gallery at The Graduate Center, CUNY.
