Matthew N. Bartels is the Chairman of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine, a regional medical provider in the Bronx and Lower Hudson Valley in New York State. He received his MD and MPH degrees from Columbia College of Physicians & Surgeons and completed Internal Medicine and Rehabilitation Medicine Residency Programs at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York. Prior to becoming the Chairman at Montefiore, he established the Human Performance Laboratory at Columbia University and directed Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation there until September 2013.

Dr. Bartels has published multiple scientific and review papers and presented at many conferences and as an invited speaker both in the United States and internationally in the area of cardiopulmonary rehabilitation and exercise physiology. His particular areas of interest include cardiopulmonary rehabilitation in transplantation, heart failure, advanced lung disease, autonomic physiology, athletic performance enhancement, biomechanical interventions for musculoskeletal pain, exercise and cognition, using new technologies to enhance delivery of rehabilitative care, international medicine, and development of new models of post acute care delivery.
