Elizabeth Sibilia is a Doctoral candidate in geography at the CUNY Graduate Center. Her geographic research investigates the production of spaces for shipbreaking with emphasis on the Bangladeshi shipbreaking market. Focusing on the dialectical relationship between the emergence of the global market and the Bangladeshi shipbreaking market, her dissertation research explores the spatiality specific to shipbreaking, where global circulations of capital are dependent on an international division of labor, one where Bangladesh plays an uneven yet critical role. Elizabeth received a Graduate Student Paper Award in 2010 for her early research on shipbreaking, she was also awarded the 2014-2015 American Institute of Bangladesh Studies Pre-dissertation Fellowship that supported her fieldwork in Chittagong, Bangladesh. She will be returning to Chittagong in 2015 to continue her work and research.
