Sofia Mariyamis
Born and raised in Brighton Beach, Sofia Mariyamis is deeply connected to the coastal environment and passionate about educating residents on the impacts of climate change. A graduate of Macaulay Honors College at Brooklyn College with a degree in Urban Sustainability and Environmental Science, she has earned recognition for her academic and leadership accomplishments, including the prestigious Gilman Scholarship for study abroad research in Barcelona, Spain, and the Student Leader of the Year “Bulldog” Award for her role as President of the Brooklyn College Sustainability Club. Sofia’s dedication to research drives her commitment to exploring the intersections of sustainability, urban planning, historical disinvestment, and the urban landscape. Beyond academics, she has revitalized community gardening initiatives through internships like the one at Kingsborough, where she reintroduced the campus gardening group and educated participants on sustainable practices. Now, she hopes to expand her work in urban sustainability, community engagement, and policy, focusing on building resilient communities and addressing environmental challenges through inclusive and innovative approaches.
