Phillip Lopate

Phillip Lopate is the author of three essay collections, two novels, a pair of novellas, three poetry collections, two books of criticism, the urbanist meditation, Waterfront. and A Journey Around Manhattan, a memoir of his teaching experiences, Being With Children. He has also edited The Art of the Personal Essay among other anthologies. His essays, fiction, poetry, film and architectural criticism have appeared in The Best American Short Stories (1974), The Best American Essays (1987), several Pushcart Prize annuals, The Paris Review, Harper’s, Vogue, Esquire, Film Comment, Threepenny Review, and many other periodicals and anthologies. He has been awarded a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship and a New York Public Library Center for Scholars and Writers Fellowship. Robert Atwan named “Against Joie de Vivre” as one of the Top 10 Essays since 1950. Portrait Inside My Head (personal essays) and To Show and to Tell: the Craft of Literary Nonfiction are both forthcoming in March 2013.
