Mieko Shiomi

Mieko Shiomi (b. 1938, Okayama, Japan) is an experimental composer. She studied music at the State University of the Arts in Tokyo in 1957. In 1960 she co-founded the Group Ongaku with Takehisa Kosugi, which explored improvisation and action. The group hosted performances by artists including John Cage, La Monte Young and George Brecht. From 1964 to 1965, at the invitation of George Maciunas, she lived in New York City and contributed to several Fluxus events. Before returning to Japan in 1965, Shiomi initiated her Spatial Poems, a series of nine events, for which she solicited participation of artists around the world to contribute reports and documentation of minimal actions or small interventions in the environment. In 1977, Mieko Shiomi returned to work on her own compositions but continued to participate in Fluxus events. Shiomi lives and works in Osaka.
