John P. Pittman

John Pittman has taught at John Jay College, City University of New York (CUNY), since 1990. Before that he attended City College of New York (CCNY) and then the CUNY Graduate Center, where he worked with Gertrude Ezorsky and Marx Wartofsky. Pittman edited a special triple issue of Philosophical Forum (Fall-Spring 1992-93) on “African-American Perspectives and Philosophical Traditions,” that was subsequently published as a book, African-American Perspectives and Philosophical Traditions (Routledge, 1996), and also later co-edited, with Tommy L. Lott, The Blackwell Companion to African-American Philosophy (Blackwell, 2003). Pittman was also a key figure in the founding of the journal Philosophia Africana: Analysis of Philosophy and Issues in Africa and the Black Diaspora. He has published recently on the cult of personality and double consciousness. Pittman is an activist with the Professional Staff Congress, the union of CUNY faculty and professional staff.
