Elia Machado

Elia Machado is an Associate Professor in the Earth, Environmental, and Geospatial Sciences (EEGS) department at Lehman College, where she teaches courses on GIS, mapping, and remote sensing, and co-directs the Geographic Information Science (GISc) internship program. Prior to her doctoral studies she was a graduate fellow at UC Berkeley and l’École d’Ingénieurs en informatique et environnement (ESAIP, France), and held research appointments at several institutions including the Biogeography lab at UC Santa Barbara, UC Berkeley, and Clark Labs, and the Marsh Institute at Clark University.  

As a geographer, she applies and develops geospatial methodologies to assess Global Environmental Change (GEC) and its impacts on human populations using a socio-ecological approach. Her research focuses on assessing vulnerability to GEC impacts and vulnerability indices, particularly in the context of natural hazards and vector borne diseases; spatial and temporal analyses of GEC, particularly of Land use and land cover and vegetation; and, more recently, the evaluation of strategies to address GEC impacts. Dr. Machado has a strong research interest in Latin America, Ethiopia, and New York City, and has taught GIS and Remote Sensing workshops nationally and internationally.
