Claudine E. Jean-Baptiste

Claudine E. Jean-Baptiste is a second year PhD student in French at the Graduate Center.  Her current research focuses on slavery and memory in the French context.  She is particularly interested in the dynamics of commemoration of slavery and the transatlantic slave trade in France and in its former slave colonies as well as female resistance during slavery.  In her first year, her interest led her to research on the representation of slavery and abolitionist discourse in nineteenth century melodramas, as well on African dance and slavery in the French Caribbean colonies in the eighteenth century.  Her scholarship also expands on French culture and civilization, in particular eighteenth century cultural history and ideologies in regards to slavery and the Haitian Revolution.
