Carolee Schneemann

Carolee Schneemann, a multidisciplinary American artist, transformed the definition of art, especially discourses on the body, sexuality, and gender. The history of her work is characterized by research into archaic visual traditions, pleasure wrested from suppressive taboos, the body of the artist in dynamic relationship to the social body.

Schneemann’s work has been collected and shown at innumerable venues around the world. Her recent retrospective at the Museum der Moderne in Salzburg, Austria, curated by Sabine Breitwieser, includes over 350 works and is accompanied by a catalogue raisonee titled Kinetic Painting. Carolee Schneemann: Unforgiveable was released by Black Dog Publishing in November 2015. Schneemann’s work was the focus of the fifth season of The Artist’s Institute, New York. In 2015 MoMA, New York, acquired her canonical painting construction Four Fur Cutting Boards, as well as EyeBody: 36 Transformative Actions for Camera. In 2016, Schneemann’s work will be included in From the Collection: The 1960s at MoMA, New York, and Postwar – Art between the Pacific and Atlantic 1945 – 1965, Haus der Kunst, Munich, Curated by Okqui Enwezor. Breaking the Frame, a portrait of the artist’s life and work by Marielle Nitoslawska, had its premiere at the New York Film Festival. Her work is represented by PPOW Gallery, and Gallery Lelong, which will mount two concurrent exhibitions of her work in the fall of 2016.
