Andrew Hemingway

Andrew Hemingway is Professor Emeritus in History of Art at University College London, where he taught from 1987 to his retirement in 2010. He has held visiting appointments at Northwestern University, the City University of New York, and the Freie Universität in Berlin. His writings – on topics ranging from eighteenth-century aesthetics to American art in the Cold War – have appeared in such scholarly journals as Art Bulletin, Art History, Art Journal, Crónicas, German Studies Review, Historical Materialism, Kunst und Politik, Oxford Art Journal, and Prospects. His single-authored books include: Landscape Imagery and Urban Culture in Early Nineteenth-Century Britain (1992), Artists on the Left: American Artists and the Communist Movement, 1926-1956 (2002), The Mysticism of Money: Precisionist Painting and Machine Age America (2012), and Landscape Between Ideology and the Aesthetic: Marxist Essays on British Art and Art Theory, 1750-1850 (2017). Among volumes he has edited are: Marxism and the History of Art: From William Morris to the New Left (2006); with Alan Wallach, Transatlantic Romanticism: British and American Art and Literature, 1790-1860(2015); and, with Malcolm Baker, Art as Worldmaking: Critical Essays on Realism and Naturalism (2018). He compiled and annotated the bibliography on “Marxism and Art” for Oxford University Press Bibliographies online. Since 1998 has been a contributing editor to Kunst und Politik.
