Artists in Residence / Artists in Resistance: Mina Zohal Classroom Visit

Mellon Teaching Fellow Daisy Atterbury, as part of her AiR Project: Artists in Residence / Artists in Resistance project from the Mellon Seminar in Public Engagement and Collaborative Research, was thrilled to welcome visiting artist Mina Zohal to speak directly to students at Queens College about her work Thursday, December 6th. Mina presented her work and had a conversation with students of an introductory writing course organized around the theme, “Literacy & Language,” which approaches “literacy” as an invitation to consider culturally-imposed notions of gender, sexuality, race, class and citizenship as inputs that determine or complicate our relationship to the language(s) of power. The discussion was moderated by instructor and Mellon Teaching Fellow Daisy Atterbury, together with visiting writer and editor Mirene Arsanios. The conversation was part of the ongoing AiR project to bridge connections between undergraduate writing students at Queens College and Brooklyn College by inviting guest speakers to discuss and to engage both classes in person and in an assignment series that puts students across CUNYs into conversation with one another online.
