What are the cultural and artistic precedents for the shift in American abstraction that “New American Painting” was meant to re- present? What are its implications for modernism, and finally for American cultural identity? Join three eminent scholars and writers as they explore these much- contested questions.
Participants include Wanda Corn, Professor Emeritas of Art and Art History at Stanford University, and author of The Great American Thing: Modern Art and National Identity, 1915-1935 (1999); Michael Leja, Professor of the History Art, University of Pennsylvania and the author of Looking Askance: Skepticism and American Art from Eakins to Duchamp (2007) as well as Reframing Abstract Expressionism: Subjectivity and Painting in the 1940s (1993); and Jed Perl, art critic for the New Republic and author of, most recently, New Art City: Manhattan at Mid-Century (2009).
