Visual Century: South African Art in Context 1907–2007

Tue, Nov 22, 2011

6:00 PM

Join project director Gavin Jantjes (National Museum of Norway) and editor-in-chief Mario Pissarra (Africa South Arts Initiative, University of Cape Town) as they discuss the evolution of their groundbreaking four-volume survey of South African art from a post-apartheid perspective. Dedicated to understanding South African art against the background of resistance and social change, this exciting new project prompts questions about the role of local production (researching, writing, publishing) in the context of the broader movement for a more inclusive, international art history that recognizes and celebrates South African contributions. Veronica Klipp (Wits University Press) will introduce the evening. Gary van Wyk (Alma on Dobbin/Axis Gallery) will moderate.
