Major art collections are being formed today of art from geographic regions that were previously not part of any market or institutionalized art system. What kinds of challenges are posed by the globalization of an art system made up of different goals and different histories? What is the impact on the infrastructure of regional collections and how might it affect the practice of archiving and physically housing previously overlooked contributions to the history of art? Using the Museum of the Avant-garde in Croatia as a case study for these issues, art historian and curator Branko Franceschi will explore the history of the avant-garde art movements in Eastern Europe that were variously entangled and in opposition to totalitarian regimes in the context of the new global art world.
