Join us for our annual Victorian Studies conference mapping the Victorian city with keynote Judith Walkowitz. Professor Walkowitz will explore how scholars from a variety of scholarly disciplines–architectural history, visual culture, literary studies, urban social history–have come to understand the love/hate relationship between the Victorian public and the Georgian city, a metropolis that Victorian citizens inhabited, disavowed, and, at least for a minority, came to treasure in the last decades of Queen Victoria’s rule. Her talk will then consider how “Georgianism” and its literary associations featured in the late-Victorian makeover of London’s Soho, helping to transform this neighborhood into a cosmopolitan pleasure zone.
