We are pleased to invite you to join first-year Guttman Community College students from House 1, Cohort 2 to view and discuss their “State in Time” projects, inspired by the work and practices of nine ‘State in Time’ artists who recently exhibited in the James Gallery’s show “NSK State Art: New York, The Impossible Return.” The students have created projects in response to the ongoing volatility of the political climate and the aggressive reassertion of nationalism, reinterpreting existing and historical images and slogans by digging beneath the surface of what is conventionally seen and heard in order to call people’s attention to the realities of their own lived experiences, to expose hidden meanings, and to rethink what it means and looks like at present to “resist” and to be “oppositional.” Student participants include:
Jay Bravo, Enmanuel Brito Corona, Yami Burgos, Derek Cornejo, Aaron
Giglio, Angel Gomez, Lizbeth Gonzalez, Alex Granowsky, Manny Haike,
Deena Hossain, Tasha Mccalla, Cheyane Ming, Katherine Morales, Nohely
Murillo, Alex Narvaez, Aaron Perez, Michael Reyes, Nicky Steinhoff. |
Cosponsored by the Guttman Community College, the Teaching and Learning Center and the Center for the Humanities at the Graduate Center, CUNY. |
