Intellectual History Conference

Thu, Nov 17, 2011

12:00 AM–12:00 AM

November 17th through November 18th

The fourth annual U.S. Intellectual History Conference, the first to be held under the auspices of the newly formed Society for U.S. Intellectual History, will be hosted by The Graduate Center, CUNY for the third consecutive year. The event’s theme is “Narratives,” and thirty-one panels over two days will explore this notion from within the context of American intellectual history. We are particularly proud to welcome as this year’s keynote speaker Pauline Maier (American History, MIT), author of Ratification: The People Debate the Constitution, 1787-1788, who will address the conference on the topic of “Ratification: Bringing Ideas Down to Earth.” Additionally, the conference will feature two exciting plenary events. The first will concentrate on the tradition of women’s intellectual history in the United States, and will be chaired byLouise W. Knight (Communication Studies, Northwestern), author of Jane Addams: Spirit in Action. The second is a roundtable on the subject of American exceptionalism that will feature Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Eric Foner (History, Columbia), along with Michael Kazin (Dissent and History, Georgetown), Rogers Smith (Political Science, University of Pennsylvania) and Beth Bailey (History, Temple).
