Inside the Box: A Conversation on Research in Exhibition-Making Institutions

Tue, May 1, 2018

6:00 PM–7:00 PM

The James Gallery

What goes on inside research-led exhibition-making institutions? Join Keith Wilson, Director of the Graduate Center’s Center for the Humanities, and Penelope Curtis, Director of the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon, for an informal conversation about the process of creating academically rigorous, yet publicly accessible exhibitions.

A scholar of modern sculpture, Curtis served as the Curator of the Henry Moore Institute in Leeds for over a decade, where a wide-ranging program of exhibitions and research looked at material culture in many forms. She then took the helm of the Tate Britain from 2010 to 2015, overseeing the opening of the refreshed building and the complete rehanging of its collections, and has since led the curatorial team at the Gulbenkian to broaden access to the geographic and chronologic scope of its collection.

Co-sponsored by the PhD Program in Art History at the Graduate Center, CUNY.
