In Theory and Practice: Accessible Cultural Education

Thu, Feb 23, 2017

4:00 PM–6:00 PM

Room 9206-9207

The goal of this workshop, co-organized by the Museum Access Consortium and the Center for the Humanities at the Graduate Center, CUNY, is to bring together knowledge from disability scholars and accessible programming practitioners in order to cultivate dialogue among colleagues.

One scholar/practitioner pairing will feature Annie Leist (Art Beyond Sight and the Metropolitan Museum of Art) and Vida Sabbaghi (COPE NYC) to discuss working with artists with disabilities.

Another will feature Cynthia VandenBosch (Turnstile Tours) and Mariette Bates (CUNY School of Professional Studies), both of whom design courses and trainings about working with people with disabilities.

A third brings together JW Guido (New York Deaf Theater) and Sara Morgulis (New York City Children’s Theater) to discuss theater programs by and for individuals with different types of disabilities.

These dialogues will generate new areas for collaboration and also serve as inspiration for others working in disability and accessibility theory and practice to bridge their institutional silos. All are welcomed to join in a robust Q and A and enjoy opportunities to network with others working in disability studies and accessibility at CUNY and at cultural institutions city-wide.
