Disappearing History: Scenes of Trauma in the Theater of Human Rights

Fri, Oct 26, 2012

4:30 PM

How do we differentiate between the bewilderment of traumatic experience and truth? Where do conscious understanding and memory fail in the face of trauma? Join Cathy Caruth (Cornell University) as she considers the question of trauma through a reading of Ariel Dorfman’s play “Death and the Maiden”. Professor Michiko Shimokobe (Seikei University, Japan) will join Professor Caruth in discussion.

This event is part of the Comparative Literature Colloquium Series, and is co-sponsored by The Project on Monroe Doctrine and its Performativity in the 21st Century: Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research sponsored by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), the Comparative Literature Department, the French Department, and the Women Studies’ Certificate Program.
