Marisa Fuentes

Marisa Fuentes's current manuscript, The Archives of Slavery: Gender, Power and Sexuality in Eighteenth Century Urban Caribbean, explores the spatial, historical, and symbolic confinement enslaved women experienced in two eighteenth-century British Atlantic port cities: Bridgetown, Barbados and Charleston, South Carolina. Grounded in archival research and recent scholarship on gender and enslavement, Professor Fuentes is interested understanding how the construction of legal, architectural and historical "spaces" marked enslaved women's bodies and experiences, in life and death. Her work brings together critical historiography, historical geography, anthropology and black feminist theory in her analyses of enslaved women in the urban Atlantic. Her broad research interests include post-colonial theory and analyses of sexuality and gender in the early Black Atlantic World.
